Meet Alexa See, General manager of The Kickhouse in Walnut Creek, California

February 24, 20255 min read

Margy: Hi, welcome to A Few Minutes with Margy. I'm Margy Lyman, and today I’m at The Kick House on Trade Boulevard in Walnut Creek, sitting down with Alexa See, the manager of this fantastic exercise studio.

Oh, and there’s great free parking in the back, which is covered—so even in the heat, your car stays cool. Just one of those small but nice amenities that make a difference.

Margy: So, Alexa, tell me about The Kick House. What exactly is it?

Alexa: The Kick House is a modern kickboxing studio with a strong focus on community and empowerment. What sets us apart is that the majority of our team—including our coaches and even our corporate leadership—are women. Our main mission is to encourage everyone to take their health and fitness to the next level, no matter where they’re starting from.

We emphasize meeting our members at their personal fitness level and working from there. Every class allows participants to go at their own pace, but we also challenge them just a bit more each time so they can build strength and see results over time. The key is that everyone feels comfortable and supported while progressing toward their fitness goals.

Margy: When I walked in earlier, I noticed an abs class in progress. Do you offer different types of workouts?

Alexa: Absolutely! We offer eight different class formats, including three levels of kickboxing. Our beginner class is 30 minutes, the intermediate class is 45 minutes, and our advanced level is also 45 minutes but at a faster pace.

The beginner and intermediate classes are designed to be very welcoming—even if someone has no kickboxing experience. Our coaches take time to ensure members feel confident in their strikes and combinations. We always have one or two coaches on the mat helping to guide participants.

In addition to our kickboxing classes, we also offer focused workouts that target specific muscle groups, such as our abs and core class. This variety helps members stay engaged and continuously challenge their bodies in new ways. We also offer personal training, which is a great way to fast-track progress and get comfortable with more advanced moves.

Margy: Last time I was here, I checked out the personal training room. It felt comfortable but also had some serious workout equipment!

Alexa: Definitely! If the main mat is busy, members can schedule personal training sessions in our dedicated space, which has additional equipment and a heavy bag. We can focus on kickboxing techniques, resistance band exercises, weight training—whatever the member needs. The goal is to ensure proper form to maximize results and prevent injury.

Margy: That’s important. One issue I see in many gyms is the lack of available trainers, which leads to people using equipment incorrectly. Instead of helping their bodies, they’re actually hurting them.

Alexa: Exactly. Poor form can lead to injuries and stagnation in progress. That’s why our coaches prioritize hands-on instruction. We make sure that every workout is purposeful, efficient, and safe.

Margy: One of the things that struck me about this place is the strong sense of community. It feels like a family. How did you get involved?

Alexa: I actually had no prior experience with kickboxing or fitness training before joining. It was an entry-level position, but The Kick House saw potential in me. They provided all the training I needed—I just had to bring the right attitude and motivation to help others.

I’ve always enjoyed pushing my physical limits, but before this, I often lacked guidance. Once I found The Kick House, I gained a structured, supportive environment that helped me grow. That’s the same feeling we want to provide for our members.

Margy: That sense of community is strong here. I heard about a member who recently injured his hamstring, yet he still comes in just to check in with the coaches and his workout friends.

Alexa: Yes! That’s exactly the vibe we aim for. We call each other the “fit fam” or “fight fam” because we truly support one another. Our members make connections that go beyond just working out.

Margy: Let’s talk about another aspect of kickboxing—self-defense. How is that incorporated into your classes?

Alexa: Great question! We teach not just the techniques but also the reasoning behind them. For example, a jab-cross-hook-roundhouse combo isn’t just about striking—it’s about understanding where and why to use each move.

We also offer self-defense seminars every few months, led by Coach AJ, who has experience in Jiu-Jitsu. These workshops help members apply their kickboxing skills to real-life situations, teaching them how to use elbows, knees, and defensive maneuvers effectively.

Margy: That’s incredibly empowering, especially for women. Now, what are some of the overall benefits of kickboxing?

Alexa: Stress relief is a big one! There’s nothing like taking out the frustrations of the day on a heavy bag. It’s also a fantastic way to build cardiovascular endurance without boring treadmill sessions.

Kickboxing combines cardio with resistance work, which improves bone density and muscle tone. Plus, it builds confidence—you walk out of class feeling stronger mentally and physically.

Margy: What are your goals for The Kick House?

Alexa: My biggest goal is to spread the word in the local community. Many people don’t realize that kickboxing is for everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. We even have coaches in their 50s and 60s! It’s never too late to start.

Margy: Do you offer any special promotions?

Alexa: Yes! Everyone gets their first class free. We also periodically offer promotions like zero-dollar enrollment fees or two weeks free. The best way to find out what’s currently available is to call us.

Margy: I also love your flexible schedule—you have early morning, afternoon, and weekend classes, plus a lunchtime slot. And a 30-minute class is surprisingly effective!

Alexa: Absolutely! It’s 30 minutes of high-intensity, go-go-go action. You start with a warm-up, then move into bag rounds with minimal rest breaks. It’s self-paced, so you push yourself at your own level.

Margy: How can people get in touch with you?

Alexa: Call us at 925-230-9791 or visit our website!

Margy: Thank you so much, Alexa. This has been great!

Alexa: Thank you for having me!

Margy: If you know a business that would be great for A Few Minutes with Margy, let me know! Thanks for watching. Margy Lyman, Dudum Real Estate Group.
