Stay up to date with everything going on
Margy: Hi, and welcome to Live The Tri-Valley Life. I’m Margy Lyman with Dudum Real Estate Group, and today I’m excited to introduce Dr. Vanessa Gloor, the chief dentist and owner of the California Center for Laser Dentistry in Walnut Creek. Dr. Gloor, how did you get started in dentistry?
Dr. Gloor: Honestly, I think dentistry chose me! While I was in college, my neighbor—a dentist—offered me a summer job. I discovered I really enjoyed it. When he retired, I continued working as a dental assistant before deciding to expand my skills by going to dental hygiene school. I worked as a dental hygienist for 15 years in the East Bay and San Francisco. Eventually, I felt ready for the next step, so I applied to dental school.
Margy: And you attended UOP, one of the top dental schools, right?
Dr. Gloor: Yes. Their program is unique because it’s only three years, so I was able to jump into dentistry quickly. After working in a clinic, I realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. I often felt pressured to do treatments that didn’t seem necessary. That’s when I decided to open my own practice, right here in Walnut Creek.
Margy: Your office is in a fantastic location near Broadway Plaza. So convenient! From what I understand, patient comfort is a huge focus for you.
Dr. Gloor: Absolutely. When I was a dental assistant, I saw patients experiencing unnecessary pain, and it really bothered me. As a hygienist and now as a dentist, patient comfort has always been my priority. I use gentle techniques, offer headphones, and even calming essential oils. I also let patients control the process—if they raise their hand, I stop immediately to check in with them.
Margy: That’s so thoughtful. You’re also known for minimizing pain.
Dr. Gloor: Yes! I’ve developed techniques to numb patients without them even feeling it. Plus, I use methods that keep comfort in mind every step of the way.
Margy: Can you explain laser dentistry? I’m not very familiar with it.
Dr. Gloor: Lasers have been used in medicine for decades, like with LASIK eye surgery. In dentistry, lasers can work on both soft and hard tissue. For example, I can sculpt gum tissue without leaving a wound or remove tooth decay—often without needing anesthesia. It’s great for patients who dislike drills or shots.
Margy: “No shots, no drills, no pain.” I like that! Do you also do implants?
Dr. Gloor: Yes, I’m certified to place and restore dental implants. It’s a surprisingly comfortable procedure and an excellent solution for missing teeth.
Margy: I have one, but the process wasn’t pleasant.
Dr. Gloor: It really shouldn’t be. I’m sorry to hear that.
Margy: I wish I’d known you then! You’re in a community with many seniors, and I know you’ve created tailored treatments for them.
Dr. Gloor: Yes, I live in Rossmoor, and I’ve written articles for the Rossmoor News. I offer cost-effective procedures for seniors, like using silver diamine fluoride. It’s a liquid that stops tooth decay by hardening the affected area and killing bacteria. It’s great for seniors, kids losing baby teeth, or anyone with decay near an existing crown, as it can eliminate the need for a crown replacement.
Margy: That’s amazing—and so innovative. What drives you?
Dr. Gloor: Helping patients feel comfortable and confident in the dentist’s chair is my biggest motivator. I love fixing things and taking care of people, which makes dentistry the perfect career for me.
Margy: What challenges do you face?
Dr. Gloor: Finding qualified staff who are committed to proper sterilization and patient care can be a challenge. I’m very strict about cleanliness—it’s my responsibility to protect my patients. If someone isn’t willing to meet those standards, they can’t work in my practice.
Margy: That’s a high bar, but it’s so important. What’s new and exciting in your field?
Dr. Gloor: We’re seeing amazing advancements in materials and treatments. For example, new tooth-colored composites are stronger and better bonded, often eliminating the need for crowns. And the silver fluoride treatment I mentioned earlier is a game-changer for stopping decay and preserving teeth.
Margy: You’re truly cutting-edge. How can people contact you?
Dr. Gloor: They can email me at [email protected] or call my office at (925) 939-3997.
Margy: Thank you so much, Dr. Gloor! This has been fascinating. If anyone knows someone who should be featured on Live the Tri-Valley Life, reach out to me. Thanks for joining us!
Dr. Gloor: Thank you, Margy—it’s been a pleasure.
