Meet Alexa See, General manager of The Kickhouse in Walnut Creek, California

April 29, 20255 min read

Margy: Hi, welcome to A Few Minutes with Margy. I'm Margy Lyman, here at The Kick House on Trade Boulevard in Walnut Creek with Alexa See, the manager of this fantastic exercise studio.

Oh, and there’s free covered parking in the back—perfect for hot days!

Margy: So, tell me about The Kick House. What is it?

Alexa: The Kick House is a modern kickboxing studio, predominantly led by women at both the coaching and corporate levels. Our mission is to engage the local community, encouraging members to take their fitness to the next level, whatever that may be for them. We meet people at their starting point and help them progress at their own pace while challenging them to get stronger over time.

Margy: I noticed an abs class when I walked in. Do you offer a variety of workouts?

Alexa: Yes! We offer eight different class formats, including three levels of kickboxing. Our beginner level is 30 minutes, intermediate is 45 minutes, and our advanced class is also 45 minutes but at a much faster pace. The beginner classes are perfect for those new to kickboxing. Our coaches ensure everyone understands the strikes and combinations, and we also offer personal training for those who want to advance more quickly.

Margy: When I was here last time, I saw your personal training area. It looked like a great setup.

Alexa: Absolutely! If the main mat is busy, we have a dedicated space with equipment and an extra bag. Personal training sessions focus on kickboxing techniques, resistance training, or weightlifting, helping members improve their form and avoid injuries.

Margy: That’s a common issue in gyms—people using equipment incorrectly, potentially causing harm.

Alexa: Exactly! Improper technique leads to injuries and plateaus in progress. Our coaches prioritize teaching proper form so members get the most out of their workouts while staying safe. We want everyone to leave class better than when they walked in.

Margy: One percent better every day, right?

Alexa: Exactly!

Margy: I also noticed the friendly, family-like atmosphere here. Tell me about your journey—how did you get involved?

Alexa: Funny enough, I had no experience in kickboxing or fitness before joining. It was an entry-level opportunity, and they trained me from the ground up. I always loved working on my physical strength but felt lost without guidance. Here, I found a welcoming community that truly cares about growth and empowerment. We call ourselves the “fit fam” or “fight fam” because we genuinely support one another.

Margy: That sense of community really stands out. You even have members coming in just to say hello, even when they’re injured.

Alexa: Yes! That’s the vibe we aim for—welcoming and supportive. We want anyone interested in kickboxing to feel at home here.

Margy: Kickboxing is also recognized as a self-defense method. How do you incorporate that into classes?

Alexa: We teach not just the “what” but the “why” behind each strike. Members visualize how strikes flow together in real-life situations. Additionally, we hold self-defense seminars every three months, led by Coach AJ, who has experience in Jiu-Jitsu. These sessions cover practical applications, like using elbows and knees in self-defense scenarios.

Margy: That’s fantastic. Especially with so many women here, it’s empowering to know you could defend yourself if needed.

Alexa: Absolutely! While we hope never to use these skills in real life, it’s great to have that confidence.

Margy: I also noticed the motivational quotes on your windows. What are the overall benefits of kickboxing?

Alexa: Stress relief is a major one. There’s nothing like taking out the week’s stress on a punching bag! It’s also an excellent cardio workout without the monotony of running or using a StairMaster. Many people, including me, don’t love traditional cardio, but with kickboxing, you’re learning skills while getting a great workout. Plus, resistance training helps improve bone density and muscle strength, offering both physical and mental benefits.

Margy: What are your goals for The Kick House and yourself?

Alexa: My main goal is to spread awareness within the local community. Many people don’t realize kickboxing is an option for them, but it’s never too late to start. We have coaches in their 50s and 60s, proving age is just a number when it comes to fitness.

Margy: Do you offer any specials?

Alexa: Yes! Your first class is free, and we frequently run promotions like zero-dollar enrollment or two weeks free. The best way to check our current offers is to call us.

Margy: I was also impressed with your schedule—it’s very flexible.

Alexa: Yes, we have early morning, lunchtime, and evening classes, plus consistent weekend options. Many people are surprised at how effective a 30-minute workout can be.

Margy: That’s right! People often think they need longer workouts, but your 30-minute sessions are intense.

Alexa: Exactly. Our 30-minute classes are designed for efficiency. We warm up for four minutes, then go straight into high-intensity bag rounds, with only brief rests while the coach explains the next sequence. It’s non-stop movement, but completely self-paced—your only competition is you!

Margy: I love that. And how can people contact you?

Alexa: You can call us at 925-230-9791 or visit our website for more information.

Margy: Great! Your website is fantastic. Alexa, thank you for your time today.

Alexa: Thank you, Margy!

Margy: It’s been a pleasure. I love the energy and welcoming vibe here. If anyone is interested in being featured on A Few Minutes with Margy or knows a business worth highlighting, let me know. Thanks for watching!

Alexa: Thanks, Margy!

Margy: Thank you!
